The Note

Yesterday I received the following note home with P's lunchbox.Translation: Dear Mom, I wish I could sit on the line. (He later told me he wanted to write the word 'pwoperly' but he ran out of time.)

Apparently, after a couple of consecutive days of forgetting where his body was during 'line time' and concentrating on peeling up the tape rather than sitting on it to listen, P's teacher decided to have him spend recess inside.

At the bottom of his note, I had an explanation from Ms. Shannon which read in part, "Manners aside--Wow! This is great writing for a first year student."

So, the bad news is that my child has a hard time sitting still, paying attention and respecting his teacher's requests. But at least my little delinquent will be able to pen a wonderful tell-all book about his escapades one day. :-)

That's cute. I hadn't thought of using writing as a consequence before. This note will be priceless in a few years!

That's so precious! An interesting article was brought in to my school a few weeks ago about how teachers really shouldn't use recess time to discipline children-- no matter what the child is doing wrong (in our case, throwing food during lunch, not being able to walk by work in the classroom without touching/knocking it over) that child SO needs the time to run and play. We've been making an effort to find other ways to effectively discipline without using recess. If I can find the article, I'll pass it on to you-- it was eye opening!
