Spring is Here!

It is as obvious as the dozens of daffodils blooming in my backyard: Spring has sprung!

Today was a gorgeous 70 degrees and we enjoyed as much of it as possible outside. After church we came home and donned the first shorts of 2008. Seeking any project that would allow us to stay outside, we cleaned out our cars then moved on to a top to bottom reorganization of the garage.

It was during that project that we made an amazing realization. We were being unusually productive and our children were (gasp!) entertaining themselves. Swinging. Digging. Batting. Burying. Sliding. Chasing. Giggling. They were happily and safely occupied while we worked. It was fabulous.

Our conversations continue to be thoroughly entertaining. The latest is K's fascination with cigarettes, which she calls 'pirouettes.' She wants to know why people like them if they cause sickness. I haven't been able to come up with a good answer for that.

I am thoroughly enjoying this age. It gets better everyday!

Too cute. Our son told someone outside a store the other day that smoking will kill them someday!!

Our now 11 year old once commented about a man who "had a candle in his mouth." We tried SO hard to not laugh at her when we realized she was talking about a cigarette! We still poke her about that one now. (She laughs now...)

I hope your spring stays...ours has come and gone too many times for me to get excited yet. this weekend it was a nice 70 degrees for 2 days straight and tonight comes the storms of sleet/hail/rain/ice...very sad! it's just begun in the last hour and it makes me so frustrated with our weather....so i hope yours stays...atleast someone needs some warm sunshine...i got a little taste :)

My son Caleb used to make the biggest scene anytime he saw someone smoking. He would grab his throat and rasp out, " I caaaan't breeeeathe. The smooooke is kiiiillin me." While I do not want him to think smoking is cool I thought this was a bit much but he was just sure that second hand smoke was going to bring him to an early demise. :)

By the way he gets all of the drama from his dad's side of the family! :)

smoking does seem illogical, but i really don't want my kids to think smokers are "bad" so i tell them that we all have bad habits that can hurt us... or i say something about how people often care more about the good feeling in that moment than the consequences of their actions (which we all do at some level too.)

sounds like your day was wonderful!!

Spring is here too, for a day. It was 73 yesterday - snow and sleet tonight.

Crazy Indiana weather. Your kids are at a great age, where you can just sit and watch them if you want without having to be in the middle of everything.

What a fabulous age! I remember that same sensation of realizing, "we are dong something productive and our children are safely occupying themselves". Woohoo!

My daughter called them "sniggerettes"! Cracked me up- I just couldn't correct her. I wonder if she still would call them that at 10? The topic just doesn't come up much these days, but I may have to test her on that!

We had the same experience last Saturday, cleaning out our garage.
We talked about how ironic it was that our kids seemed SO happy that day and so excited about what we'd accomplished that evening, so much more than they do on a day solely devoted to their activities. I told a friend of mine that I think they were truly happier that day than they would've been had we taken them to Disney World!

Sounds like a fabulous day, even if there was manual labor involved! :-)

I remember the time(not that long ago) that I realized I had actually cleaned an entire bathroom while my daughter kept herself occupied. Such a lovely feeling -- I can completely relate to your experience yesterday!

I just wanted to tell you how much I enjoyed reading your story. I started reading this morning and finished this evening. Thank God for your healing.
Your children are so precious!
They are full of life.

We have a fascination with cigarettes too. My little guy calles them "secrets". He says the funniest things when discussing them. I tried to explain that it is a bad habit that people have a hard time quitting so he has all kinds of suggestions for that!
