Who Told You That?

I love to read Jon Acuff's blog because he always manages to make a point in a very enjoyable (yet honestly convicting) way. This post of his is one of my favorites.  

I had a similar experience today with K--asking her to wear a blue fleece pullover that is sold as a unisex item by Lands End, but she was convinced it was too boyish. Ultimately, I won the battle. Yet, I know it is just the beginning of the war. 

My wise friend Holly, a great Mom of five, has made it a practice to emphasize Phillipians 4:8 with her children. 

Finally, brothers, whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable—if anything is excellent or praiseworthy—think about such things.

When her children get caught up in an upsetting situation regarding what other people have said or think she will ask them the first phrase in this verse: Is that true

I love Jon's addition to that from Genesis...Who told you that?

Lord, please give my children the gift of discernment. Help them to know WHO is speaking into their lives. Grant them the ability to recognize truth and cast off lies. There will be many voices speaking into them throughout their life and far too many of their messages will be untrue. We are told that our adversary is, in fact, the father of lies. 

Help my children (and me!) to be sheep that know their master's voice and follow it all the days of their lives. ( I am into praying big now, you know?)

Steve Green- children's Christian music singer- has the BEST song to that verse in Philipians. My girls listen to it all the time! His songs are verses to music- you would love it for your three if you have not already heard of his music.Can't remember the name of the actual CD, but any Christian bookstore will have his CD's.

Wow! Perfect for today. A friends mother spoke some very hurtful words into my 12 year olds heart while she was a guest at a sleepover.(She wasn't misbehaving, rather the mother criticzed my daughter's appearance and gave her un-needed makeup tips.) I have addressed this mother (and will never allow her to supervise my daughter again!) but have been praying for my sweet girl's heart, and how to repair the damage. This is so helpful to me today. Thank you!!
