What I Am Reading

I am currently in a season of writing a little less and thinking, reading and living (at the baseball field, ahem) a bit more.

My adult women's small group is on the last few chapters of Breaking Free by Beth Moore. I have to confess that because I don't have one overriding stronghold in my life (addiction, abuse, etc.) I had thought this book wouldn't be as powerful for me as some of the rave reviews and testimonials I had read. This has just not been true. The Word of of is living and active and I have really gotten a lot from this study of Isaiah.

My teen girls at the group home are loosely (some weeks we have to detour into something else that is going on with these troubled girls) moving through The Seven Checkpoints Student Journal: Seven Principles Every Teenager Needs to Know by Andy Stanley. We have a continuity problem based on the nature of group homes--but there have still been terrific foundational lessons each week.

In my personal reading, I am really enjoying (and recommend) Modern Parents, Vintage Values: Instilling Character in Today's Kids by Melissa Trevathan and Sissy Goff. These experienced Christian family counselors explore all the trappings of childhood/tween/adolescence with the challenges of media, screens and online activity. They offer sound insight into ways to virtuously structure the freedoms and privileges you give children as they grow up in this modern world.

So, that's what I am reading...how about you?Any recommendations?

I love to read but lately have not found any really good novels...I have been re reading some favorites. On the spiritual side I am waiting to receive a book I ordered by Henri Nouwen. I have heard a lot about him lately and wanted to read some of his writings. On the grandchild front, we are reading No David and Fancy Nancy!!:)

Oh, Arlene, I hadn't thought about mentioning what the kids are reading...they have discovered graphic novels (modern day comic books) and are loving them!!! (Daniel Boom AKA Loud Boy, Lunch Lady series and even Tom Sawyer!)
Henri Nouwen is awesome!!

I'm reading Bringing Out the Best in Your Child: 80 Ways to Focus on Every Kid's Strengths when I'm waiting in the school pick up line or for OB appointments. As part of my devotional I've been reading The Power of the Praying Parent. I highly recommend BOTH!

I haven't read anything for fun lately - I have a tendency to get sucked in and then I don't get anything accomplished. :)

My kids are reading their Jesus Storybook Bible & a short devotional before bed - FINALLY can say we are in the routine of doing this!

Jmom...I have read No David so much that I have it memorized! My grands are at that young age where they want to read the same books over and over again. lol...I have to tell you that when I first saw Graphic Novels at my library, I could not believe my eyes that they were allowing people to check out graphic books.lol...My idea of graphic and their idea of graphic were not the same. Thanks for letting me know what your kiddies are reading as I have a five yr old granddaughter who will be moving up to that genre soon. As always...Love reading your blog..thanks for sharing.

I've recently read Bringing Up Girls by James Dobson; Bringing Up Boys by James Dobson; How to have a New kid by Friday (I can't remember the author). I don't have a "problem" child, but the last book was good anyways, it had a lot of good points.

I am currently reading The Grace of God by Andy Stanley. It has been such a fresh perspective of God's grace to me. Although I am very familiar with the concept of grace, this book has really given me a fresh insight to how much grace He has extended to mankind and to me personally.

I've been reading Gospel-Powered Parenting by William Farley. It is very powerful and honestly feels less like a parenting book and more like a book for my own spiritual growth. I highly recommend it!

I've also been re-reading Nancy Leigh DeMoss's book Holiness: The Heart God Purifies. It's been thought-provoking and encouraging.

JMom - I'm a faithful reader in Texas! I'm so grateful for what you share on this blog. My kids are younger than yours so it's helpful to hear what you're experiencing and wrestling with at each stage.

I've just finished One Thousand Gifts by Ann Voskamp. Amazing. And life-changing for me. Still mulling over it and have plans to re-read soon.

Just started Teach Them Diligently: How to Use Scriptures in Child Training by Louis Paul Priolo. Wanting to learn how to bring Scriptures into our everyday lives better and have those verses in my mind and hopefully ready when life presents itself. I want to have a basis for what we're teaching her and help her learn as she grows up why we follow God's written word. Have only read a few pages so far.

And I'm loving Sally Clarkson...all the time. I do not homeschool; however, her parenting writing touches me daily! Love it!
