A Lesson from Daddy

It was 50 degrees outside late this afternoon when my husband asked me to pick up the ingredients for S'mores. He & K had a plan for a family camp out (our first) in the backyard. They have talked about it for months...but it was always too hot, too rainy or too busy of a weekend.

I arrived home around 6pm to find he and K setting up our tent in the backyard. The temperature was dropping and light rain was falling. Our sons had retreated indoors--but K & her Daddy were determined.

I must admit that as much as I love adventure--I definitely have my limits. Inside I was rolling my eyes. Couldn't he just tell her "no?" By the grace of God, I bit my tongue and unloaded the groceries. (How I wish I made that choice more often!)

The rain tapered off and within 30 minutes we were popping Jiffy Pop, roasting hot dogs and making S'mores for dessert. It was definitely a memory-making event. My husband was so right to dig in and push through when I would have thrown in the towel.

Tonight I am thankful for the balance God gives to families. I am also thankful for the picture God gave me of the rewards of going out on a limb and pushing through challenges rather than just caving the minute the going gets rough. I am exceedingly thankful for my husband. We don't always see things the same way or go about things in the same fashion--but together we are a great team.

It certainly wasn't the most nutritious meal we have ever had around here, but it was one of the more memorable. And as they were eating popcorn hot dogs I actually heard K say, "This is the best meal ever. Can we do this every night?"

After looking up the forecast and seeing a projected low of 33 degrees, wisdom prevailed and we decided not to attempt to sleep out there. So tonight I am also thankful for central heat and my cozy bed!

I've been reading your blog for a while now and have never commented. I think we probably have some friends in common.

God uses your words to challenge and encourage me. Thank you for always sharing your heart.

I love photography and always enjoy your pictures. This one is adorable...especially K with her cooking mitt and sun glasses!
