This and That

I was thinking recently about how I hope to remember some of the 'little' seemingly insignificant things that are so much of who my children are at this age. None of these seemed to warrant a post of their own, but for posterity's sake here a few snapshots of my 5 year olds:

R has had a remarkable soft spot in his heart for the poor people of Nicaragua, (pronounced "nick-a-wag-gwa)since a class project last year. Last week he found some random change around the house and asked me if I could please send it to Nicaragua since they have no money and go to school in a dump. He emptied his "give" jar and even persuaded his siblings to contribute a bit. He beamed as he took $7.31 to a woman we know who will be travelling back there in January for a mission trip.

We have talked about needy children through Compassion sponsorships, the children's home and Operation Christmas Child, but the plight of the Nicaraguan children has really have touched something in his little heart!

Soccer has finally brought a spark to P. He has historically been my child that begged me to sign him up for things , but lost interest almost immediately in any sort of team sport. After his first solo soccer outing last weekend, something has changed. He had a blast at practice again today. He even announced on the way home "I just LOVE sports, Mama."

It is not about the 'sports' as much as it is so encouraging to see him confident about something physical. He is not the fastest, the most aggressive, the scrappiest, the most passionate or the most coordinated. But, he hasn't seemed to notice and is thoroughly enjoying himself. What a milestone for my child who started therapy for developmental delays at 5 months old!

K is relishing her 'mother hen' role with the boys lately. Her Sunday School teacher told me that this weekend when P was misbehaving K got to him before she could. She overheard her, as she pulled him aside, say, "P, straighten up. You are being ridiculous."

GULP. I cannot imagine where she got that from.

I call that being bitten by repeatable ears. Ugh.

I love K's comments to P. My 11 year old daughter is like that with her big brother. It's a riot - well to me. Big brother doesn't always appreciate the humor! Here's to remembering the fun moments of life with the kiddos.
