If you are in need of some perspective, check out the live blogging being done from Uganda by some excellent bloggers. The full list is here. If you only have time for a few, I recommend Heather, Shaun, Sophie or Randy.
This is my official plug for Compassion. The children we sponsor are pictured on our refrigerator, down low (at eye level) for my children. They stop and look at Ivan, Tewodros and Fani then initiate talk about them a few times a week. They pray for them by name and I am incredibly humbled. But, still, we do not even begin to 'get it.'
One of the things on our family's DEFINITELY DO list is a trip to Africa when the children are old enough to take it all in.
This is not a lecture (except maybe to myself). I am the essence of a consumer. I like stuff. I like to be comfortable and surrounded by pretty things. It is VERY good to be reminded (and often) how precious souls in this world live...through absolutely no fault of their own, but simply by virtue of where and to whom they were born.
Sobering, humbling, moving.
Edited to add: K helped me select a female Ugandan child today, since our other sponsored children are boys. We selected Esther because K was mesmerized by the blue beads in her hair. "She doesn't have any money to buy bows so she jus' wears dose silly beads." Then she asked me if we could send Esther some bows.

We've sponsored Compassion children in the past, while we were raising our own, took a break when we had ours in college, but it's starting to feel like we should start up again. It seems so huge, but one child at a time, we can make a difference.
We sponsor one child, Dilip. We started around Christmas this year. I would love to do more! I am so glad that people are passing along the blogs...the stories are exaclty what you said...
Sobering, humbling, moving.
Thanks for this good reminder. I'll think of this through my day...during all the excess!
We have two compassion kids too, Navimei and Sonadhar. They are awesome! Compassion is a great program for those looking to make a difference in a life.
I'm not sure if I have left a comment before...
But girl, it seems like you and I are on the same wave length. Whenever something is heavy on my heart I come over to your site and I promise you have put into words what my heart is trying to say. I love your stories about your kiddos. I have a 6 and 4 year old and the funny things they say and do!! What a blessing you are to me!
Thank you for sharing this today. We have been trying to figure out a good way to get the boys involved in giving. They're piggy banks are getting full and we've started talking about saving money (at the bank and/or for things we would like to buy) as well as the importance of using our money to help others. This looks like an awesome way for us to make that real to them.
We are signing up tonight and I can't wait to pick out a child! This blog tour was just the push I needed!
We are 1st timers to Compassion and I am already blown away by what our fellow bloggers are showing us. I, too, am humbled, moved, and without words. We CAN make a difference. I cannot wait to get my info on our precious girl, Sophia, in Uganda.
Thanks for pushing others.
Blessings~
Fran
I chose a five-year-old girl named Naomi because of the bloggers being over there. It's so amazing what God is doing through Compassion!
