Don't tell Paula Deen

K has decided she no longer needs an afternoon nap. Since I still need her to have an afternoon rest, she stays in her room for an hour with books, blocks and her dollhouse. When the hour is up she comes downstairs to spend some quality time with Mommy.

She is quite the rabble rouser with the boys, so I love this sweet one-on-one time with her. Lately we seem to spend the time baking. (Go ahead, anyone who knows me in real life, laugh until your sides hurt.)

To say that I am not a "cook" is a huge understatement. Need proof? As I type this I have a 2.5 inch burn on my forearm from putting a pizza in the oven last week. I had to google how to boil an egg in order to make Easter Eggs for the children last year. I once tried to put out a grease fire with water.

I blame it all on the fact that I caught our kitchen on fire in the 6th grade as I tried to use a double boiler to melt birthday candles into one big candle without putting water in the bottom pan. My punishment was microwave-only cooking for a few months. A few months turned into a few years and here I am.

Yesterday afternoon K requested that we bake cookies. Since I devoured the last of the cookie dough in a moment of weakness, I scoured the web for a recipe for "Easy Chocolate Chip Cookies" that involved ingredients in my pantry. I found one and we excitedly got to work.

I have never made cookies from scratch. I was feeling quite proud of our accomplishment until I noticed the batter was taking on a very brown color. I guess I should not have put ALL the ingredients in the mixer at the same time. The chocolate chips were practically liquified. As I turned the mixer off to salvage what I could K said excitedly, "Oooh. It looks like bar-be-que, Mama!"

Isn't that exactly how you want your cookie batter described?

We proceeded with the recipe and although non-traditional, they were gobbled up just the same. I later found this post and plan to bookmark it in order to redeem myself next time.

Um...Well....bless your heart!!

Keep trying, the most important part is the memory you made with K.

That cracks me up! I like the cookie mixes in the pouch where you just add water.

Oh, Jmom, now that I can see the screen again, I can leave you my comment, hee hee! You made my evening : )

We really need to get together . . . and make cookies.

I am so proud of you for trying something that is out of your comfort zone in order to make precious memories with sweet K. She won't care about anything but spending time with you.

J,
What matters is the time you spent with K, what precious moments you are making with her. I love this post, thanks for being real. None of us can really cook that good either. If I could count the times, my kids just gobble their food up as quickly as possible and leave the table without a comment, I would be a rich woman.
love,

That's pretty much the receipe on the bag of Nestles'Toll House morsels! The only difference is the toasted oatmeal & other add-in's and an extra teaspoon of vanilla!! LOL

What SWEET time you are spending with your little cutie! You are making such precious memories. Who cares if those cookies looked like bar-b-cue? You now have a unique story/moment - just between the two of you - that you will always share. How wonderful that you can have that one-on-one time with her. :-)

Well, the first time I tried to make a pound cake from scratch (which by the way, EVERYONE told me how easy it was to do) my family tasted it and thought I had made sweet cornbread!I have never attempted it again. Your posts are great, by the way. I can't wait until the next day to see what you have written.

Yum, chocolate chip basted ribs! LOL... I was clumsy enough to burn two fashionable lines across my fingers a few days ago when messing with my oven too. Maybe it's a sign....NAH :-)
