Much of the conversation at our house these days seems to be about how BIG the kiddos are. I have definitely used this to my advantage. When whininess and bad attitudes rear their heads I say: "Oh, I thought you were big. This is not how big kids behave." When discouragement kicks in, I remind them to keep trying. They CAN do it. They are BIG. It also helps for things like, "Big kids don't put food from the floor in their mouth" and the inevitable "Big kids use the potty." (I am in denial, but Potty Boot Camp is a mere 2 weeks away. I have it on my calendar: July 2- Independence from Diapers.)
Despite all this conversation, it still caught me by surprise when K looked at me very seriously a couple of days ago and said out-of-the-blue, "Mama! You are gettin' so BIG." I have gained a few pounds, so I couldn't help but wonder...is that a compliment?
This morning, I was quite entertained as I heard K tell the boys, "I am da Mommy. You are my kids. It's time for bed."
I poked my head around the corner to see her tucking the two of them into her bed. They were all wrapped up in a sea of yellow and pink--with their loveys, of course. My heart swelled as she said "I love you..." and fell just as quickly when she said, "but I have to go to a meeting." She then put her purse on her shoulder and walked out of the room. R said,"I'll miss you, Mommy."
As she started down the stairs, I interjected and said, "Where are you going for a meeting?"
K replied, "To da church."
"Oh, can I come with you?"
"No, Mama. It is jus' fo' gwownups."
"What will you do at your meeting?"
"Umm, we jus' gonna talk about some ABCs."
I laughed out loud. For the past 12 months I have served on my church's Pastor Search Committee. I have meetings every Wednesday night from 7-10. I have tried to really explain the purpose of my meetings in a way they can comprehend, so they understand that I am leaving them for something worthwhile. Apparently, my explanation has been over their heads. All K knows is that I come and go with stacks of papers with no fun pictures...just a lot of ABCs.

I discovered your blog some months ago through a friend - Renee. I love to read your posts. You really have a gift for capturing and writing about the things with which many of us moms struggle. I also always get laughs reading about your children and their exploits. (I have cousins -also 2 boys and a girl, grown now- who are triplets and it is both funny and amazing to me as I read your tales to imagine my aunt dealing with the craziness of daily life with triplets!)
This latest post really made me laugh. Isn't it amazing what kids notice and take in -- even when you think they aren't paying attention or don't really "get it"?
Oh my gosh, that made me laugh out loud! Silly girl!
There is a book called, THE DISCIPLE-MAKING CHURCH, in which the author talks about ABC's being "Attendance, Building, & Cash." It sounds like K was right on track with her comment, since you go to church meetings!
That is funny. It is amazing what they understand.
that is so cute!!
That is hilarious- you made me laugh at loud at the thought of Kate announcing her meeting in the midst of your heart-swell-moment!
Little girls want to be their mama's so bad! Too cute.
This is funny! I love to just sit and observe the kids right now. It is fun to listen to them talk to each other. Sometimes it is nice talk and sometimes it is not so nice.
It is great to witness the bond between them. They are so lucky to have each other.
What an awesome road we are both traveling down raising triplets. How is potty training going?

Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery. I’d say your little girl adores you. My husband’s in music ministry and I think he’d say a lot of meetings are just held to discuss the ABCs =)
We just concurred our independence from my daughter’s pacifier and diapers are next on our list. Having a specific date helped me tremendously. Maybe I’ll wait a little longer on the diapers so I can get your words of wisdom first.
Blessings~
