The Night Before 1st Grade

One of the very best parts of blogging for me is the ability to go back to milestones and relive how I was feeling during a particular season/event. It happened tonight as I was toying with the idea of writing a take-off on Twas the Night Before Christmas. I searched the phrase and voila...a post about their first day of 5 day a week school I wrote three years ago as they were starting Montessori.

I re-read it tonight with bittersweet feelings. I don't feel nearly as wistful this time around. We are in familiar surroundings. My children are excited. We have had a terrific Summer full of many of the blessings of budding independence...but all good things must come to an end, seasons change, and it is time to get back to a routine. We are all ready.

This year K & P will be in class together and R will be right next door with the teacher that K had last year for Kindergarten. (Our school only has two classes per grade, so we are on a rotation of who is together and who gets to be on their own.)

Our backpacks are packed and hanging by the door. New shoes are ready to be worn...and although uniforms are not yet ironed, they will be eventually.

R finally learned to tie his shoes--a goal we set months ago with the deadline being first grade. He mastered it at 6:11pm tonight--with a whole 12. 5 hours to spare before his deadline. :-)

I don't know how I will feel tomorrow, but tonight, this Mom is in a good place. I remember yesterday fondly and know tomorrow will hold exciting adventures...but I am peaceful tonight with exactly where we are in the here and now. My children's steps have been ordered by the Lord. Their days have been written in His book before one of them came to be...and so have mine as their Mom.

Tonight we lay our excited heads on our pillows in peace and wake up tomorrow to a day that He has already planned and a year He has ordained. I am so grateful that the confident peace that faith in God provides. He is in control.

Here's to first grade!

Love this post...my oldest granddaughter starts Kindergarten tomorrow and this Nana is on pins and needles. We have prayed for K to get the right teacher for her personality and are trusting prayers were answered! We are so vulnerable where our little ones are concerned.!
