Have you ever been in deep conversation with someone whose words have so resonated with you that you wanted to somehow hit record so you could play it back later--just so you could really soak it in? I had that experience this morning while praying with a friend. I wanted to pull out a notepad and jot down what she was saying--but decided that might be a tad inappropriate since we were praying.
She was preparing for a difficult task--comforting someone she cares about in their loss of a spouse. As she prayed she said something to the effect of:
"Lord, I pray that You only allow words to come from my mouth that are TRUE.
I pray that You will take away any need I have to fill the silence or speak words that are trite. Lord, keep me from just saying things I am unsure of just because they might make her feel better in the short term.
May I speak only things that are true.
Give me wisdom and discernment to either say only things that are true or to keep my mouth shut." (my paraphrase)
I am not sure why it struck me so powerfully, but I decided I could probably stand to pray that prayer every day! Whether it is in a time of trial or just in awkward social settings, don't we all fall victim to the temptation to speak something without thinking through if it is the best thing?
The best way to insure that our words are full of truth is to have a heart full of Scripture. I know it is true. I need to commit myself to that.
May my words be true or not at all...

I need to pray this too! Thanks.
LOVE LOVE LOVE this. I needed this today...my new daily prayer. Love you! Love reading your blog and how He uses your words to give me (repeatedly) just what I need to hear at any given time!
