Our children are big fans of birthdays. It doesn't even seem to matter whose birthday it is...as long as it involves sweets and celebration.
This is the first year that they were satisfied with not having a theme for a family party. Daddy's decorations were all hand made from ribbons and construction paper. (Daddy was a trooper to wear the pink crown K made him, complete with a kitty on the front!)
They did get a little unrealistic in their gift buying ideas. The boys legitimately asked me if we could buy Daddy a new truck...and they weren't talking about the toy version. I am sure my exorbitant salary as a homemaker and community volunteer could finance that extravagance with no problem! Instead he got new shoes, a reorganized office and...ahem...his first pair of dark rinse jeans.
At least there will be one fashionable person in this family. K & P were flipping through a J. Crew catalog this morning while I was getting their breakfast pulled together. I was only loosely paying attention to their conversation when I overheard the following:
"Yes, that would be the one for her. She'll like that."
"Mom, we found a swimsuit for you. You should buy it!" P said.
My interest was piqued.
"And don't worry. It does NOT show your tummy," K added.
"Yeah. It is one you would like. It looks like a little dress instead of a real swimsuit."
I had no idea I was so obviously a frumpy Mom in the eyes of my children.

Oh! That is so cute that they were "shopping" for you. Maybe they just want to keep you looking like a Mommy with the skirted suit. (I'm sure you'd rock it!) Happy Birthday to pink-crown-with-a-kitty wearing hubby!
You aren't frumpy, my darling. You are modest and that is not a bad thing to be showing your children, in light of everything else (including skin) that they might see in the world!
Happy birthday to your husband!
Haaa! Nothin' gets past the kiddos. I was carrying my elder daughter (age 5) out to the car the other day because it was so snowy/slick in the driveway and she said, "Mommy, be very, very careful because you're Kind of old and you have chubby arms."
Right on both counts!
