Like a Child

Sunday night as I was tucking P in he was really antsy. His nonstop movement really annoyed me as I was praying for/with him. (It wasn't even a long prayer...45 seconds tops!)

As I finished praying I looked in his little face and said, "P, do you listen when Mommy is praying?"
"No, not so much," he replied flatly.
Well, at least my boy is honest.

I asked him if he would like to pray instead and he agreed. Then he recited the words he always prays, "Dear God. Thank you for our family, even for the people who don't have families. In Jesus name we pray, Amen."

Last night I decided to try a different approach.
"P, why don't you pray tonight instead of me?"
"Okay."
"And tonight, why don't you just talk to God. If He were laying right here next to you, what would you say?"
He looked at me with a sparkle in his eye and a grin spread wide across his face.
"Heeeeey, God!
I love you.
Tickle Tickle
Amen."

I think God smiled when he heard P's prayer. I know I did. Oh, that we all could have the innocence of a child!

i always love to hear my children's prayers. their comfortable approach to talking to god is inspiring to me. none of this wordy mumbo-jumbo stuff adults seem to think is necessary. just honest and pure words spoken from a sometimes silly but always precious heart.

My favorite prayer. Maybe I'll pray it tonight, too.

That was a great idea! I am going to try that!

That's so sweet! When I was little I used to pray at dinnertime "God please help the food. Amen."

I'm not a mom (yet) so I don't have any experience but have you tried suggesting new topics for him to talk to God about … like tonight can you pray for mommy? or let's pray for daddy tonight or your sister or your brother. or is there something special that happened today that you'd like to thank God for?

You obviously do an awesome job as a mom! Definitely no criticisms from here. :)
