The D word

The children collected all sorts of 'treasures' in Maine, primarily consisting of sea glass. Since 5 year olds with broken shards of glass is generally not a great idea--not to mention what the NTSB officials would have thought at the airport--I 'forgot' to pack them for our return.

My chief collector, K, remembered as we approached the Bangor airport. I offered the children something from the airport gift store instead. P chose a stuffed beaver. His flat tail has led to many discussions about beavers and what they do. This morning we watched a video of beavers building dams and homes. The children then used cushions to build like beavers in the family room.

On the way to church I overheard the following from the backseat:
"My dam house is blue. What color is your dam house?"
"No, MY dam house is blue. Your dam house can be purple!"

We were 2 blocks from church...I could only imagine the looks on their sweet Sunday School teachers faces if this conversation continued without the appropriate back story.

I explained to the children that it was very important that they always use the word beaver before the word dam. It led to a conversation about bad words...and I mourned the loss of a little more innocence, (but did giggle a couple of times as I replayed the conversation in my head...)

I had to explain the word heathen to K- on my way to church. Must have been one of those days.

My aunt wages wars with beavers on her land in Cave Spring. They build their "dam houses" and her land floods! She'll really enjoy this story because I'm sure she calls them the same thing - only with an N! haha :)

My son is one year older than your trio. We've had a few "bad word" conversations in the last year and I shudder to think about what he'll come home from kindergarten with. As I always say, mothering is not for the faint at heart.
