Nana's 90th

Tonight we celebrated our dear Nana's 90th birthday with a delicious dinner. Nana is the quintessential Southern lady. She has an ever-pleasant demeanor, is always put together and well-accessorized and still wears (small) heels at 90!

As we were waiting for our entrees to arrive tonight she summarized her 90 years on this Earth in the following way: "I spent 20 years with my family (of origin), then 48 wonderful years with my husband, and the last 21 years on my own--and through it all I have had an incredibly blessed life. I have battled cancer twice, lost my daughter (at age 40), lost my husband and lost my parents...but through it all God has been good."

She went on to speak of her peace and contentment with being 90 years old--how she always thought she would fear death the closer it came--but that instead she was truly happy. Sitting across the table from her, watching her countenance as she spoke, it was obvious she was sincere.

Although it was her birthday, tonight through her words and her presence, she was the real gift!

(The looks on the children's faces in this picture say it all. They were terrific sports for hour one, but hour two definitely pushed the limits of reasonable expectations of 4 year olds.)

Happy Birthday, Nana! You don't look anywhere near 90, but you definitely have 90 years worth of joy in your eyes and smile!

Delightful post.

What a wonderful family you have! Your grandmother seems absolutely precious. And I have to say, as a Southern girl born and bred myself, that I KNOW Nana is a genuine Southern woman because even at 90 she is working the red lipstick! I seriously would like to know her beauty regimen - she looks fantastic!

My Mamaw was the same way...very much a lady until the day she died three years ago at age 90! I never saw her nails not done. They were always long and filed and polished! She dressed every day in hose and always had her jewelry on...I should do a post on her. I think I will! Love how feminine Nana is and what an example of God's grace on her life! Thank you for sharing.
