For Such is the Kingdom

Then they brought little children to Him, that He might touch them; but the disciples rebuked those who brought them. But when Jesus saw it, He was greatly displeased and said to them, 'Let the little children come to Me, and do not forbid them; for of such is the kingdom of God. Assuredly, I say to you, whoever does not receive the kingdom of God as a little child will by no means enter it.' And He took them up in His arms, laid His hands on them, and blessed them. Mark 10:13-16

I have been thinking this morning about looking for God in my daily life as a Mommy of preschoolers. As we marched around the house this morning, screaming and singing words that were unintelligible, but no doubt FULL of laughter and joy, I was struck by the simplicity of my children's world view and faith.

They have not been hurt or tainted. They do not "know better" than to believe what they are told. Heartbreak and human experience have not scarred them with wounds and reminders that they need to "look out for themselves" lest they be taken advantage of. Their joy is pure. Their disappointment true. Their trust beautiful. I am finally starting to get that passage from Mark.

While I do know that there are countless Scriptural passages about wisdom and discernment, shrewdness and thoughtfulness, this morning I am struck by the purity of a child's faith. As I watched them squeal and shout and play (then ultimately start singing a praise song through an old wrapping paper tube) the fruit of the Spirit came to mind.

But what happens when we live God's way? He brings gifts into our lives, much the same way that fruit appears in an orchard—things like affection for others, exuberance about life, serenity. We develop a willingness to stick with things, a sense of compassion in the heart, and a conviction that a basic holiness permeates things and people. We find ourselves involved in loyal commitments, not needing to force our way in life, able to marshal and direct our energies wisely. Galatians 5:22-23 (The Message)

Affection for others is abundantly displayed in their wide-armed, running-across-the-room , wrap-around-your-body hugs and spontaneous kisses.

Exuberance for life? I think we have that one covered.

Serenity is the deep sigh they exhale as they climb into bed, wrap up with their favorite lovey and stare into my eyes for our nighttime routine.

We are still working on the next part of the passage (and by we I definitely include myself), but the passage does say we "develop" right?

This morning I am hopeful, encouraged and grateful for the lessons God continues to teach me through the littlest people. They are truly gifts straight from heaven that keep giving and giving.

AMEN!

I don't want to be a child again, but oh how I long for a childlike faith.

I believe our children can be the best teachers. We just have to be a little bit more in tune to the Holy Spirit and see what He can reveal to us through them.

The beauty of a child is so deep.
Thanks for this wonderful word.
Blessings!
