Roadtrip

Yesterday, the kids and I took a roadtrip to surprise my Mom, Bee Bee, for her birthday. The trip is 3 hours each way. Thankfully, the potty training is a little more under control that the last trip where I had to pull over 9 times in 3 hours. This time it was only 5. I am also grateful that I did not personally require a pit stop, because there is nothing quite like unloading everyone to come into a public restroom and serve as an audience for my "fluid adjustment."

My Mom was thoroughly surprised. Aunt Boo and my niece, Sydney, met us outside her office building shortly before 5pm. We were able to sneak into her office undetected. (Quite a feat with small, giggling, excited children.) The door to her office was open and she was working on her computer with her back to us. R, smiling ear to ear, creeped up behind her and touched her arm. As she turned around the look on her face was priceless. Watching it dawn on her as the other children ran in with shouts of "Hap-pee bir-day, Bee Bee! Sup-wise!" was worth every minute of the 6 hour round trip and the tank of gas!

We had dinner, playtime, presents and cake before changing into pajamas, reloading the car and making the trek back home. Thankfully, my 10 year-old niece made the return trip with us and is staying until Thanksgiving. I have been so productive this morning! By 8:30am I was dressed, all the beds were made, laundry was going, breakfast was cleaned up and my 20 lb turkey was brining. The cousins are thoroughly enjoying each other. I am loving having this extra set of hands--and what a bonus that she is as entertained as they are!

I think I might need to ask Santa if he can bring me a 10 year-old for Christmas. ;-)

Okay, seriously, you would love having the help. MY GIRLS make this house work, and I tell them continuously what great moms and wives they will be. I could not do it without them. It is great for the kids to have her there to play with a fresh face for a few days. Enjoy your holiday.

I'm sure your mom was so delighted to see you all and brave for you making such a quick trip with the little ones. So glad your neice is there to help you. I might borrow your idea of asking for a 10 year old girl for Christmas. That's brilliant. :)

OK, as long as I get my 10 year old back, you can borrow her. I can't wait to see yall again on Thursday (and get my 10 year old "baby").

Yesterday was so much fun!!!

Aunt Boo

Oh, I'm so glad I haven't finished my Christmas list yet. Ten-year-old girl is going at the top of the list.

Happy Thanksgiving, my friend. Thanks to your review of the brining technique, my brining liquid is cooling as I type. Can't wait to try that turkey tomorrow.

That's so fun and you're so brave.

If Santa is bringing 10 year old girls to help out with the kids this year, then sign me up.

You'll have three ten year olds soon enough! Do you brine your turkey because of watching Good Eats? My husband loves that show and has been brining for the last three years. The turkey always turns out so juicy! It's so cool that you had such a productive morning...that is a wonderful feeling. Have a nice Thanksgiving!

J,
It is so great that you braved that road trip to surprise your mom on her birthday. I love reading your blog (long time reader, first time commenter here) and I think you are doing an AMAZING job raising your trio. I know the insights you provide will be invaluable to me, when my babies get older. I'm expecting quads - one, coincidently, also to be named "K" (again, long time reader here - I know the real names!)And I just want to say that reading your blog has made the inpatient stay in the hospital so much easier. So, thank you! Thank you very much!
