Nothing quite tests newly refreshed patience like returning home to big school projects due this week! Next week our children will celebrate their school's annual International Day. Each class has a country they have been studying. Because my children are in three separate classes, I am learning a lot about Ethiopia, Sweden AND Spain simultaneously.
K & P were each assigned a topic for a parent/student poster project. Because we have been gone for 5 days and have church tomorrow night, this afternoon was our time frame for getting it done.Daddy was very busy with his re-entry to work, so but for a brief 10 minute window, I single-handedly led my troops through research, printing, cutting, gluing, writing and design over a two and a half hour period.
K's poster was a bit easier because her assignment was family life in Ethiopia and we have been corresponding with Tewodros in Ethiopia for 3 years through Compassion. More importantly, K loves to write and draw and create. She has a good attitude and a great sense of design. She enjoyed her work.
P, on the other hand, was assigned "Ancient Rune Stones/The Runic Alphabet" from the Viking period. He also reminded me at least 15 times that "I don't like to write." He did a lot more cutting and pasting. It took a long time, but mercifully, there were no tears from either of us (unlike when we wrote Christmas thank you notes.)
Although R basically had run of the house/free play while we worked, he likes to stay near the pack. I never fully understood the extent of his loyalty until this afternoon when he decided to forgo independent play to stay in the kitchen with us and (although not assigned) make a poster too. Since he was not assigned a project, he just drew his favorite things about Spain--the costumes and the soccer.
His is not nearly as put together as the others, but he did it all himself (but for printing the pictures.) There certainly are times when peer pressure works in our favor! I am so proud of his initiative...but seriously, two hours of poster making with 5 year olds has worn me out! Good thing I missed them so much.
Now I get to spend the next week as a completely non-sewing Mama working on an Ethopian costume. K has requested something beaded...

Hi! I'm a new reader, but am loving your blog so far! :) I have a five year old little boy, Dylan. Imagining having three five year olds is... wow! haha! You seem to do a great job at it! :) I can't wait for Dylan to start school, homework, and prodjects next year (he missed the cut off for k5 this year)!!
Sounds like a fun afternoon! I can't wait to see K's beaded Ethopian costume! :)
Welcome Home !
They look so cute even doing homework !
Beaded. No sew. Good luck.
:)
A suggestion from one no-sew Mama to another. Cut a scoop neck and arm slits from an upside pillow case; they are the perfect size for little kids. Then decorate it with fabric pens or by gluing on pieces of colorful fabric. You can string beads and safety pin them on.
The kids (and Mom) did a fantastic job! Try having K string beads, the bigger the beads, the faster they string, and then just tack the ends on with fabric glue!
OH MY!!! I love homecomings like this! We are in the same boat my friend. I just finished throwing together a talent show dance with Brantley (2 hours past bedtime)...costume and music cut and burned to a CD. There are so many rules in this competition that I couldn't believe we actually had no dances to work with from her millions of dances she's done. Tyler had surgery today (Dalana told me about your sweet note...thanks so much...it meant a lot to her) so we went back and forth from the hospital all day taking lunch...then dinner...then finally the poor thing got out of surgery at 7:30 p.m.. My niece Dalynne is having surgery on Friday. I am having a tea for my cousin Maria at my house on Saturday and the girls have more school work than anyone can keep up with. Turks and Caicos...take me away...AGAIN. Can't wait to catch up and hear more about your trip! IT SOUNDED GREAT!
Oh, that projects and homework have only just begun! I am so thankful my 5 year old hasn't had anything too detailed for homework just yet!
I just sent you an email but totally forgot to reference that it was a response from this post...so thought I would stop by here and leave you a little note!
Your children are just precious!
