K

Last Summer K enjoyed a week long Dance Day Camp, but she was hesitant to sign up this Fall. I am a firm believer in letting my children explore many different types of activities at this age so they can discover their gifts--so I did not push it.

She came to me this Fall, weeks after classes had begun, to ask if I would let her take 'ballerina lessons' again. I waited a couple of weeks to see if she brought it up again, and she did, multiple times. It just so happens a 4 year old girl had dropped out of one of their afternoon classes, so K was allowed to join in mid-December. I was informed that there would be a January recital and a May one, so I just assumed we would be making our big stage debut in the Spring.

K had other plans. After the first class her teachers informed me that she was a quick study. They thought she could join the other girls on stage for the January show. At the time I was hesitant...could she really do this after only 4 classes? Then, we spent the better part of the last month with horrible coughs, ear infections and breathing treatments. K missed the last two classes.

I had a sit down conversation with K Tuesday and explained that she would probably not dance this time, but I would certainly take her to watch. She assured me that she really wanted to try.

"I just love being on the stage, Mama. Please can I do it?"

The dance instructor was supportive and so this afternoon we went to dress rehearsal.

The minute she hit the stage she started beaming...

...and she never stopped.

I once had a love for the spotlight in community theater. I was in everything the Springer Opera House put on stage between 1986-1989. Then, I discovered cheerleading and boys.

Hopefully it will be a long time before K experiences such distractions! Maybe hers will be soccer or music or art. We'll see.

Until then, I suppose I am a stage Mom!

I love seeing her so happy.
