Recording the Journey

Although my group has now completed our study of Stepping Up, we have decided to spend the next 6 weeks before the Christmas Break reading Eugene Peterson's A Long Obedience in the Same Direction for even more commentary on Psalm 120-134.

I think I am enjoying the Psalms so much because of the very real glimpse into the heart of man as we are on this journey of knowing our Father in spite of and in the midst of the roller coaster of life. I love that we have record of the songs that were sung on the pilgrimage of believers so long ago. Isn't it refreshing to know that although the circumstances of their lives were vastly different from ours, the core longings, emotions and heart of life was so similar? It is a bit like reading their blogs had they had them.

Truly blogging is a great present-day way to connect with people and through our vulnerability help them realize there are others who feel the exact same way they do. It is so normalizing in many regards.

I cannot help but wonder how my children will feel as they read these words 30 (or more) years from now as they are farther along in the journey God has earmarked just for them. I just can't imagine what it will be like for them to have a glimpse into their mother's heart 3 decades prior in a more peer-like manner. Will K read this as she is a young mother and find herself astounded at how well she can relate? Will the boys read segments to their wives or their young children when they ask to hear stories from when they were little boys? Or maybe they will one day take a printed copy of my blog to their therapist's office as proof that their issues all stem from their family of origin. :-)

The thought of how they will one day hold these words is one of the primary reasons I write each night.
